Del Weem’s Condo - “Justified: City Primeval”
The condo set was massive, with 16’ windows on two sides. With the limited space outside the set, we used a video wall instead of translights. During preproduction, it was thought that actual (analog) film was to be used for shooting, which meant the set had to have ample wild ceiling panels to drop in lighting. Even though the show was ultimately shot digitally, our DP was able to make use of this extremely versatile ceiling configuration for maximum cinematic effect.
Note that the video backdrop parallax is not set up for the point of view I took the picture from, but in the screenshot to the right the background perspective appears correct.
Axonometric views provide a good overview for construction, grips, and electric to reference. The entire set was on a 4’ deck, industry standard for most sets with large windows.
In preproduction, I produced many 3D previsualizations to help the production designer to sell the set to the directors/showrunner, to help them get a sense of how blocking might work.
Everything in this closet: shelving, kimono display, island, shoe display — was all custom designed by me and fabricated in-house by our construction team.
